Drake Carr: Hollywood Walk-ins: Curated by Michael Slenske

Megan Mulrooney is pleased to present Hollywood Walk-ins, a residency and exhibition of live drawings by New York-based artist Drake Carr. From April 5 – May 3, each week Carr will turn the gallery into his studio, inviting artists, friends, models, and other figures from Los Angeles’ creative scenes to sit for portraits in a studio-like space designed by the artist. As the residency unfolds, these drawings will be installed throughout the gallery, forming an evolving archive of both Carr’s work and the city’s cultural landscape. This Los Angeles edition follows previous iterations of the project in Paris and New York.

Carr’s live portraiture distills fleeting encounters into striking, stylized compositions. Working in real time, he captures a range of subjects—from everyday visitors to key cultural figures—with a sharp, graphic precision and a heightened sense of drama. His approach draws from the tradition of society portraiture, where pose and persona are meticulously constructed, while also reflecting the exaggerated elegance of fashion illustration. Rendered in soft hues, his figures exist hover between presence and performance. In this iteration, the act of preparation becomes part of the performance itself: hair and makeup artists will be present in the gallery, transforming sitters in real time and extending the portraits’ theatricality beyond the page.

Collaboration and spontaneity are central to West Hollywood Walk-ins. Each portrait will unfold through the dynamic between artist and subject, shaped in the moment by movement, energy, and exchange.

Drake Carr (b. 1993, Flint, Michigan) is an artist known for his dynamic figurative paintings, drawings, sculptures and performances. His work has been exhibited internationally at Fierman, New York; Mariposa, Paris; and New York Life, New York; among other spaces. His practice has also been featured in Artforum, Vogue, Art21, W Magazine, i-D, and Cultured. His subjects have included Pat Cleveland, Karlie Kloss, Hari Nef, Tonne Goodman, Nancy Grace, and Raul Lopez, among others. Carr lives and works in New York City.
