Conjoined Containers stages two vessel-like forms fused together by stacked slabs. Casey was thinking here about duality, the ways two people can be bound to one another, whether by birth, by circumstance, or by choice. The forms feel simultaneously tethered and constricted, suggesting how intimacy and kinship can generate new wholes while also imposing limits. It’s a painting about the paradox of connection: to join with another is to expand, but also to surrender a measure of autonomy.

Visually, the composition emphasizes this tension through balance and symmetry that feel just slightly precarious, as if the stack might tilt or slip. The vivid palette heightens the emotional charge, while the shallow, boxed-in room situates the pair in a more psychological rather than physical space. In this sense, the work channels Casey’s broader fascination with impossibility in painting - structures that could never hold in real life, but here communicate something true about the strange, fragile architectures of human relationship.
