Joni reflects both the mythology of Laurel Canyon and Taggart’s own early experiences in Los Angeles. Joni Mitchell, the queen of Laurel Canyon, was drawn to the way water reflected light—an effect that resonated with Taggart, who had been an avid swimmer in his early teens. He was fascinated by the way water distorted forms, turning the surface into a site of abstraction. This work captures the sensory impressions of his first months in L.A., merging the city’s music and atmosphere with his own visual preoccupations.
