A Room to One’s Own
May 16 – June 20, 2026
Megan Mulrooney is pleased to present A Room of One's Own, our second exhibition with Berlin and Paris-based painter Flora Temnouche. The exhibition will be on view from May 16 – June 20, 2026.
Temnouche's paintings return to her apartment-studio, building on the atmosphere of solitude and contemplation that characterized her previous exhibition with the gallery. In A Room of One's Own, though, the terms of looking have shifted. Where her earlier work moved outward toward the fragments of a shared domestic world, these paintings turn inward, toward the self and the problem of its representation. The paintings in this exhibition are as much self-portraits of her own form as they are of her own space, and they circle a question of self-determination in self-portraiture: how much of oneself can be shown, and how much must be withheld?
A fur recurs across several works, embodying the tension between exposure and withholding that runs through the exhibition as a whole. The fur is worn or draped, something sensuous or protective in turn. Mirrors operate along similar lines in the exhibition. In some paintings we catch only a sliver of her reflection; in others she looks into the glass, and we cannot see what it holds. In yet other paintings, the blank white walls of her Berlin apartment fill the canvas, a kind of refusal to disclose interiority. What is withheld, Temnouche seems to suggest, is as much a self-portrait as what is shown.
The exhibition title borrows Virginia Woolf's formulation. But here, the room here is physical rather than figural: a Berlin apartment, a Paris apartment, a painter's studio. It is also the condition Temnouche has staked out for herself in this body of work. Her canvases retain their worn, almost archaeological quality, gesso and marble dust sanded back until the surfaces seem like aged frescoes. What has shifted is that where her earlier work found beauty in the textures of daily life, these paintings locate it somewhere more interior, in the particular freedom of a woman who has made her solitude entirely her own.
Flora Temnouche (b. 1995, lives and works between Berlin and Paris) has had solo exhibitions at Galerie Elsa Meunier, Paris, and Galerie Zeto Art, Paris. Group exhibitions include AplusB Gallery, Vienna, and Brescia; Taymour Grahne Projects, London; Galerie Elsa Meunier; Museo Ebraico di Venezia; Palazzo Galli Tassi, Florence; and Kunstpalast Museum, Düsseldorf. She participated in the Transhumances Residency, hosted by Numeroventi, Palazzo Galli Talli, Florence.
This is her second solo exhibition with Megan Mulrooney, by whom she is represented.
