The compositional simplicity of this work recalls Chardin's 18th-century French still lifes as well as Giorgio Morandi's (one of Flora's favorite artists who heavily influenced her practice) lifelong devotion to the objects immediately around him. Like those precedents, Flora finds an entire world within the intimate domestic radius, the painting asking you to slow down and really look. The blue-rimmed plate and the melon itself also carry a longer art historical freight as both are recurring motifs in Dutch and Spanish Golden Age still life, connecting the work to a centuries-old tradition of finding the monumental in the everyday.
