For this composition, Bangs references William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s La Jeunesse de Bacchus, while looking to Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt for ideas about color and mood. She had been thinking about how the French salon hierarchy placed allegorical and history painting at the top and still life painting at the bottom, and how those categories became somewhat gendered in practice. This led her to wonder what might happen if an allegorical painting were made from domestic still-life objects, and that curiosity became the basis for this painting. She hoped it would suggest an open-ended narrative, and the title is also borrowed from Berthe Morisot’s 'Young Girls at the Window'.
