This piece is based on the Palestinian Poppy. It has many names in different regions, one being in Arabic
Shaqa’iq an Nu’man, translating to wounds or blood of our brothers. The red poppies that dot the
landscape are said to symbolize the bodies of martyrs who have given their lives to protect their land and
its people. This is where the titles for both works come from, playing on the words blood and brothers
showing the spiritual and familiar connection to a group of humans and a plant.
