Voodoo Lily - When I was prompted with the theme of “nude," I intuitively thought to depict a garden variety Voodoo Lily, the fetid, anthropomorphic flower that blooms once a year. Personally, when I think of “nude,” I think of being naked—showering, sex, odors, orifices. Art‑historically, I think of Georgia O’Keeffe—celebrated and scandalised for posing nude for Alfred Stieglitz and known for blurring the boundary between botanical subjects and human anatomy in her paintings. My painting of a Voodoo Lily mirrors that entanglement: the flower’s sensual curves, abrupt bloom and striking presence evoke both body and blossom, drawing a line from nature’s anatomy to human vulnerability and desire.
