This work is based on the Fire Poppy, a California native that only emerges in the wake of wildfire. Its seeds lie dormant in the soil until activated by heat and smoke, making it one of the rare plants that depends on scorched land to grow. Often the first bloom to appear after a burn, the Fire Poppy signals both survival and renewal. The title, Kindled, draws on the dual meaning of the word: to ignite a flame, and to give birth—evoking both fire and emergence.

Maddy Inez is a Los Angeles-based artist working in ceramics, printmaking, and installation. Her practice engages the spiritual and medicinal lives of plants, weaving together themes of healing, myth, and the body. Drawing from alchemy, science fiction, and herbal traditions, she creates vessels that reflect the traumas of land and body, challenging colonial narratives and embodying ancestral memory.
