This piece is based on the Okra plant. It was brought over to the United States through the slave trade. It
is said that people who were enslaved braided the seeds into their hair to hide from their captors. The
image of this act really resonated with me. It’s an act of revolution and a promise of survival. The title of
the work comes from the weaving of the braids that transported the seeds over seas, but also meaning
“weaver” as a storyteller or historian. For all of the knowledge and stories that came with the Okra.
